The campaign aims to provide residents with advice on keeping themselves and their property safe, the responsible sale of items such as eggs and flour, and responsible trick or treating which includes road safety and being respectful to those who may not wish to take part.

It will also highlight firework safety and the impact that fireworks can have on some residents, animals and wildlife.

Officers will be out patrolling in the borough throughout the season visiting shops to offer advice about the responsible sale of items such as flour, eggs and fireworks.

They will also be visiting sites where illegal bonfires have been held previously and liaising with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service where necessary.

The council has also asked residents to be considerate of vulnerable neighbours as well as animals and wildlife if lighting fireworks at home.

Councillor John McKay said: “We want everyone to enjoy all the fun that Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night bring, but we want people to do that safely and respectfully.

“For some people, including vulnerable residents, people living with post traumatic stress disorder and animal owners, the season can be difficult, and we are asking people to be respectful of others when celebrating.

“Our community safety patrol team will be out in our communities giving advice and information to help everyone enjoy a safe and peaceful season.”
