West Berkshire Council leader shortlisted for leader of the year
West Berkshire Council leader Lynne Doherty (Con, Speen) has been shortlisted for a national award.
Every year, the Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) – the country’s largest local authority membership organisation whose members include councils, trade unions, charities and private sector partners – recognises local councillors who have made a positive impact on their communities and who have been nominated by residents or their peers.
The LGIU said competition for this year’s awards was particularly tight, with more than 400 nominations – a record number – received across seven categories.
Six council leaders are nominated for this year’s leader of the year award, including Mrs Doherty.
Mrs Doherty was elected to West Berkshire Council in 2015, originally serving as executive member for children, young people and education.
She has served as council leader since May 2019.
Nominees for the award were selected on the basis of their dedication to their role, the vision they have set for their authority and their determination to deliver the best outcomes for the community.
Their commitment to transparency, accountability and scrutiny, as well as their work to develop strong relationships with local partners, were also considered and will be assessed by a panel of judges before the winners are announced on December 1.
Commenting on her nomination, Mrs Doherty said: “I am truly humbled to have been nominated for this award, especially in such a strong field of other council leaders.
“At a time when the choice to serve the public as an elected representative can be a difficult one, I am proud to do so in the area where I live.
“West Berkshire is a place that I love and I feel hugely privileged to serve the local community as leader of the council.
“The past year has been a difficult one and we have all been working hard to keep the district safe while also concentrating on delivering the good local services our residents need.
“I therefore want to thank the brilliant team of officers and members at West Berkshire Council whose tireless efforts are at the heart of our success.”
LGIU chief executive Jonathan Carr-West said: “This year’s councillor awards shortlist showcases the best of local government.
“During a time when they have experienced unprecedented challenges and pressure, these councillors are true champions for local government and their communities.
“The last year has reminded each and every one of us of the effort and lengths to which councillors go to support their citizens.
“As such, we were overwhelmed by powerful stories and experiences coming through the over 400 nominations received for councillors across England and Wales.
“Our most sincere congratulations to all of those councillors shortlisted.
“We look forward to unveiling the winners in December.”
