Council offers "equal adventure" for children with severe disabilities
A grant of £7,700 from Sport England allowed for the installation of special hoists and tables at the two centres and staff have now been specially trained to work with the disabled children.
Dave Treagus, Operations Officer for Activity Team West Berkshire said: “We are gaining experience all the time. It is incredibly rewarding to work with children and young people who have never been able to be included in outdoor activities and give them a chance to take part.”
Hilary Cole, West Berkshire’s Executive Member for Leisure said: “This is a great achievement. By taking a positive approach to disability, these Centre’s make dreams come true by including young people in activities that were not previously available to them.”
Staff at the centres recently made it possible for a young, disabled person to experience canoeing for the first time and another young person with severe epilepsy went climbing for a week in the Peak District.
