Council searching for "long-term solution" after Robin Hood lights fail for third time

Problems at the junction, at which the lights are frozen on red from all approaches apart southbound on the A339, were first reported to NewburyToday by motorists at around 5am today.
Drivers are facing long delays as a result, with reported travel times of 45 minutes from Donnington and 40 minutes from Newbury College.
An engineer is now on site.
Similar problems were experienced on Friday morning and again on Sunday morning, however West Berkshire Council spokeswoman Peta Stoddart-Crompton said yesterday that the council would not be investigating the issue further as Siemen’s, the engineer appointed for the whole of Berkshire, felt that “this particular intermittent fault has been resolved correctly and in the most efficient way.”
However, this morning a council spokesman, Keith Ulyatt, said at 9.10am that the council was now looking for a long-term solution.
He said: “The specialist engineer is on site.
“The issue is that the fault on the lights is intermittent.
“As with anything, intermittent faults can be difficult to identify.
“The immediate aim is to get the lights working properly again as soon as possible, or if that is not possible turn them off and put up traffic signs until they are fixed.
“A long term solution is also being sought this morning.”
A number of motorists have taken to social media to voice their frustrations at the latest failing in the lights.
@PeteHalewood tweeted: “@NewburyToday Truly astonished there hasn’t been a serious accident on the Robin Hood roundabout. 3rd time they have failed in a week.” (sic)
@LaurensMum2010 also tweeted: “@NewburyToday Only for the 3rd time since Friday really! As if #Newbury isn’t already a bottle neck on a good day!!”
Thames Valley Police told NewburyToday yesterday that anyone caught travelling though a red light could still be prosecuted, even if the lights are frozen on red.
