Hampshire County Council launches consultation on how to improve its SEND services - and asked views of young people

Hampshire County Council is asking for the views of young people with special educational needs and disabilities, to help improve SEND services in the county, writes Amy Cowan.

Coinciding with this year’s National Inclusion Week, a consultation has been launched and is already addressing barriers that young SEND individuals face.

Councillor Steve Forster, executive member for education, said: “We are committed to achieving the best outcomes for all young people in Hampshire. By inviting those with additional needs to share their insights, we ensure our conversations are inclusive and valuable.”

The work is interlinked with the SEND Youth Forum, which was established earlier this year and aims to drive positive change for young people.

The Forum has already shared tips with council staff, addressing the importance of not ‘talking down’ to SEND individuals.

To highlight the significance of this platform, Mr Forster added: “By participating, young people can shape their own futures. Insights from the forum will support educational practices, curriculum development, and support services, giving them a sense of ownership in decision-making.”

The consultation is open until November 3; it is fully anonymised and can be accessed online.
