Council staff go green
The council is starting a special pilot scheme with the objective of reducing the carbon emissions associated with its internal fleet and staff vehicles.
The installation has been funded by a public sector grant from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) which covers 75 per cent of the cost.
The plan comes a week after First Great Western announced that Theale and Aldermaston stations will receive public charging point installations, with Newbury following as part of the redevelopment project for the railway station and Market Street.
The council said it hopes that by the end of 2014, electric vehicles will be increasingly used as a viable alternative for council business.
It also wants to encourage other businesses and households to follow suit and benefit from the low running costs of electric cars.
West Berkshire's executive member for Cleaner Greener, Dominic Boeck, said: "This is another step towards a lower level of emissions from our day to day operations.
“It should be celebrated that the technology has become more mainstream and the possibility of more electric cars on the road is exciting. The longer term savings for the council and our partners in reduced fuel bills and air pollution is worth the effort.
"If these initial installations prove effective, I hope we will see even more charging points across the district."
