Debt fears for residents as tens of thousands of direct debit council tax payments are taken early
TENS of thousands of West Berkshire residents could be left overdrawn after an accounting error has seen direct debit council tax payments taken a day early today (Thursday).
A spokesman for West Berkshire Council, Keith Ulyatt, said: "We can confirm that approximately 33,000 direct debit payments for council tax and business rates have been taken a day early - that is, today rather than tomorrow. We do not know why this happened but have immediately asked BACS (Bankers' Automated Clearing Service) to investigate."
