Council to submit application for flood basin around Memorial Fields, Thatcham

West Berkshire Council (WBC) is in the process of submitting a planning application for a flood basin in Thatcham.

Earlier this year it held a public consultation on it and is now moving on to the next step of the process.

It is looking to construct a 0.85-hectare flood detention basin and a 120m-long swale.

Subject to the necessary approvals being granted, construction work is programmed for 2024.

Three other flood alleviation schemes are progressing in Thatcham.

The three projects are at Bowling Green Road, Heath Lane and East Thatcham.

The council said that once completed £3.5m project will help protect a further 107 properties from the impact of flooding.

WBC executive member for highways, housing and sustainable travel Denise Gaines made visits to the sites recently.

She said: “This is very positive news for the town of Thatcham.

“This clearly demonstrates the Liberal Democrats continuing support and investment in measures to help prevent the devastating impact of flooding and combat the challenges caused by climate change and an increase in extreme weather events.”
