Councillor calls for 20mph zone for a Greenham road

Greenham ward member is now calling for residents views on whether Westwood Road needs a slower speed limit

A DISTRICT councillor’s request to see a 20mph speed limit enforced in Westwood Road, Greenham, has been refused by a speed limit review task group.

Julian Swift-Hook (Lib Dem, Greenham) said that officers from the council’s highways departments supported his view that a reduced speed limit should be enforced, and agreed that it should be extended to New Roads and other roads on the estate.

However, representations made to West Berkshire Councils speed limit review task group by Thames Valley Police refuted the idea that such measures were needed and the group decided not to approve the proposed speed limits.

Highways officers have been asked to carry out further investigations into options for traffic- calming measures in the proposed roads and to return to the next meeting of the speed limit review task group with new proposals.

Mr Swift-Hook said: “What is your view of traffic-calming measures, if they reduced speeds on Westwood Road and New Road?

“What measures would you would consider acceptable, and are there any that you would not want to see even if it meant putting up with speeding cars?

“I’d like to know what you think.”

He added that he would be asking Greenham Parish Council to consider purchasing some vehicle-activated signs, at an estimated cost of £5,000 per sign.
