Countdown to county show

With less than 50 days until the popular event returns to the Newbury show ground at Chieveley, organisers and volunteers have launched into a frenzy of activity - including the painstaking progress of marking out the 177 acre tented town.
The event will host a range of attractions running alongside the livestock competitions and trade stands, including the ever popular disco dancing sheep show, the British Show Jumping Association international stairway final and a ‘farmer’s life’ floral art contest.
Members of the armed forces will also drop in to the show with appearances from the RAF Falcons parachute display team and a flypast of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
This year’s show will be the first to be run by the new general manager of the Newbury & District Agricultural Society, Mary Hopkins after she took the reins from the previous manger of eight years Becky Elvin.
“Everyone here is very excited by the way things are progressing. Stand bookings are running ahead of the last two years, which is perhaps an indication that businesses are generally feeling a little more confident about the economy,” Ms Hopkins said.
“I am very impressed by the sheer extent of the volunteer enthusiasm for this show. The whole place is really humming – it’s a privilege to be part of it.”
The show will be held on September 21 and 22 and there is still time to book or pick up tickets from any of the 48 outlets throughout the area.
