Couple enjoy gem of an anniversary
Alan and Sylvia Costa, aged 80 and 82 respectively and live in Stoney Lane, Shaw, both moved to the town in 1942 and met six years later at a dance put together by the Young Women’s Christian Association.
A further five years passed before the couple wed at St Mary the Virgin church in Speen on March 7, 1953.
Mr Costa served his national service in the Royal Air Force during their engagement.
The pair marked the occasion with a lunch with their daughter, Jacqueline Evans, at the Hare and Hounds Hotel, Newbury.
Mrs Costa said she was thrilled to have received a card from the Queen in recognition of their diamond wedding anniversary, arranged by their daughter.
She said: “[It was] a lovely thrill and a great surprise.
“We don’t feel at all at that age.
“We don’t feel old, we just don’t know where the years have gone.”
A larger celebration will be held with the whole family, including their grandchildren Andrew, aged 13, and Christopher, aged 18, who is currently reading philosophy and theology at Oxford University.
