Crane works to shut stretch of M4 through West Berkshire over weekend

Highways England is to close a stretch of the M4 through West Berkshire all this weekend for works on the central reservation.

The motorway will be closed to traffic in both directions between Junctions 13 (Chieveley) and 14 (Hungerford), from 9pm Friday until 6am on Monday.

A large crane is being brought in to replace the central reservation, with narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit in place until the works are completed.

The closure is part of a programme of improvements to Wickham bridge, which has sustained water damage, and signed diversions will be on offer via the A338, A4 and A34.

Chieveley Services will remain open throughout the closure period and will continue to serve the public.

There is a chance that the M4 works could be completed early, in which case Junctions 8/9 and 6 will be shut from midnight on Saturday through to 6am on Monday.
