Crash causes A339 lane closure on Sunday
Was manhole cover to blame?
A CRASH on the A339 in Newbury on Sunday resulted in one lane of the southbound carriageway being closed at the Burger King roundabout.
The single car collision, involving a blue Subaru, happened just after noon. No one was injured in the incident.
The car had travelled over the junction before the driver lost control and spun the vehicle round, badly damaging the front end. The vehicle came to a stop facing the opposite direction.
A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: “Lane two on the southbound carriageway was blocked for a short period while the vehicle was removed.”
The junction has become a hotspot for traffic collisions in recent years with some residents raising concerns about a manhole cover located on the southbound carriageway which could cause cars to lose traction as they accelerate away from the roundabout.
A West Berkshire Council spokeswoman said the local authority had no indication that this was the case, but said it would investigate the issue if it was reported.
Joanne Bassett said: “We have not been made aware of any issues about manhole covers in this area but we would ask residents to report any concerns to us so that we can investigate further.
“It’s quick and easy to tell us the issue using our online form at www.westberks.gov.uk/reportaproblem”
