Crime at its lowest for 25 years, show police figures
In total, there were 127,497 crimes recorded to Thames Valley Police across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire between April 2013 and the end of March.
This is a reduction of five per cent on the previous year, and marks the lowest figure since 1989, in which 119,067 were recorded.
Over the past 12 months, there were 5,668 dwelling burglaries recorded, 20 per cent less than in the same period the year before, equating to 1,401 fewer victims of dwelling burglary.
Theft of vehicles was also down by 10 per cent with 1,892 recorded, which resulted in 206 fewer victims, while violence against the person figures remained stable, with 19,623 last year and 19,529 the year before.
However, the number of recorded sexual offences rose from 1,995 last year to 2,618.
Police and Crime Commissioner Anthony Stansfeld, who is also a West Berkshire councillor, said: “I am delighted that crime in Thames Valley is at its lowest for 25 years.
“This is an impressive performance and I would like to say thank you to all officers and staff for their hard work.
“As one of my key priorities I am particularly pleased to see another significant drop in domestic burglary.
“This drop in crime has been achieved despite considerable budget reductions and demonstrates how well Thames Valley Police are using their resources, including new technology.”
A full break-down of figures for West Berkshire will be provided at the end of the month.
