Crowds flock to the Aldermaston and Wasing Show

The annual event has its roots during the Second World War when some of the villagers decided to hold a competition to encourage everyone to dig for victory. It has grown since it’s inception 72 years ago with this year’s event producing a large turnout.
There were lots of activities running throughout the day including vegetable displays, pony rides, children’s races and birds of prey demonstrations. The ever popular egg throwing contest made a return as well as the ‘Duck Derby’ rubber duck race.
There were 106 classes at the event in total, with the last three classes being for the best dressed duck, with Mitch Timberlake winning the aged 12 above event; William Miller scooping the 6 to 11 years category, while Harry Webb was the under six winner.
The strongman contest, organised by Craig Mullineux of Aldermaston Wharf, also pulled in the crowds on its return for the second year running. Music for the show was provided by Tadley Concert Brass.
Show secretary, Claire Bruton, said: “There were 95 entrants this year, an increase on last year, and that was our very successful 71st Show, which is wonderful."
This year’s show also marked the passing of Pat Eastop MBE with a tribute at the entrance to the main marquee, marking her role as a judge at the show.
The show raised around £400 which will be shared between the Newbury branch of the Alzheimer's Society and the Aldermaston Parish Church Fabric Fund.
The project aims to to restore the Grade-I listed St Mary's Church and build a meeting room in the grounds behind the building.
