Cupid searching Sue at Newbury British Heart Foundation
Cupid’s arrow has winged its way to the British Heart Foundation shop in the Market Place, after the charity recently launched its national Love Notes annual campaign, with chance to display a romantic message in shop windows for a minimum £1 donation, to raise funds for research into heart disease.
The romantic plea: “Sue will you marry me? Paul X,” was discovered by astonished staff at the Newbury shop, among all the red, heart-shaped notes.
Area manager, Maggs Richardson, who has worked for the charity for 15 years, had never known a marriage proposal turn-up during the charity’s Love Notes campaign of many years and which staff believed was genuine.
“The campaign must have been running 10 years and I’ve never seen a proposal before. It was a shock to find it,” said Mrs Richardson.
“There’s been one other (nationally) in that time - in Cwmbran, Wales,
but definitely never in Newbury!”
The mysterious ‘Sue’ has a couple of weeks to decide whether to accept, as the romantic, heart-shaped gesture will remain in place for another couple of weeks, until Valentine’s Day on February 14 - with plenty of window space for any more messages, with the aim of raising £400,000 in total at the charity’s 700 shops countrywide.
“Hopefully, by Valentine’s Day, we will know,” added Mrs Richardson
BHF charity shops will be themed ‘Ramping up the Red’ next Friday, with staff dressed in red and a chance to find the perfect red item to wear to
ramp up the romance on Valentine’s Day.
