Former prime minister David Cameron pays tribute to late brother, Alex

Former prime minister David Cameron has paid tribute to his brother, Alexander Cameron KC, who has died after a prolonged struggle with pancreatic cancer.

Mr Cameron, a top criminal barister, died at his home on Tuesday (March 21). He was 59.

He previously stepped down from the bar in 2020 after receiving his cancer diagnosis.

His younger brother and former prime minister, David Cameron, contacted the Newbury Weekly News to pay tribute to his late brother, whom he called "brave, prepared and full of love right to the end".

"My older brother Alex was a wonderful man," said the former prime minister.

"An amazing father, brother, husband and friend, literally to hundreds. People warmed to him instantly and never forgot him, nor he they.

"He is taken from us much too early, but at least he made it home to be with his wife Sarah, and his children, Imo and Gus. We were all able to say goodbye. He was brave, prepared and full of love right to the end.

"Coming back to Peasemore meant everything to Alex. It was his home for much of his life and he loved the village, the people and the countryside of West Berkshire.

"He served on the parish council for many years, including as its chair and was always helping with local projects and appeals.

"It is heartbreaking that Alex is no longer with us, but he has left us memories to cherish and an example to follow. He was always the person I looked up to the most and I loved him deeply."

Mr Cameron confirmed there will be a small family funeral this week and a much larger memorial later in the year.

"As you can see from the obituaries that have been written, he was a ferociously bright and accomplished lawyer, a dedicated football player, talented actor, lover of life and everything it has to offer," he added.

"Most of all he was kind, funny, bright and loving. There will be a lot to remember and celebrate."

Mr Cameron credited his older brother of three years with propelling him to the office of prime minister in 2010.
