David Lloyd to take on Monks Lane sports complex - but still no opening date set

DETAILED plans for a sports complex on Monks Lane have now been approved by West Berkshire Council, however an expected opening date has still not been revealed.

The club, which will open on the grounds of Newbury Rugby Club, will be operated by gym giant David Lloyd Leisure and will consist of an indoor and outdoor pool, two squash courts, eight tennis courts, two studios, gym space and several other features.

It will replace the current Greenacre Leisure Centre, Greenham Road, which is to close in July to make way for 40 homes on the site.

However, the application has been anything but smooth running, with plans for the housing and a replacement site first brought to the table in 2011.

What followed was strong opposition from existing Greenacre members, particularly those who used the centre for squash, badminton and swimming, who claimed the replacement facilities were inadequate, and a stream of revised applications.

Outline permission for the leisure scheme was finally granted in March this year, with permission for the housing following in August.

This is the first time that detailed plans have been put forward for the new leisure centre now that an operator has been appointed.

However, at the time of the Newbury Weekly News going to press yesterday (Wednesday), David Lloyd had not confirmed when construction was set to start, and when the new centre was due to open.
