Detectives investigate Mortimer Scout hut arson
According to Hampshire Constabulary, the Scout hut in Ramptons Lane, which was rented out to the community by the YMCA, was set on fire at about 1am on Tuesday, June 26.
Insp Phil Raymond of the police’s serious and complex crime unit, Basingstoke CID, said that the hut, a substantial building used by various youth groups in the area, was completely destroyed in the fire, causing an estimated £85,000 worth of damage.
“Fire investigators have ruled out accidental causes for this fire and say that it was started deliberately. This was an important facility locally and was largely built and maintained by volunteers,” said Insp Raymond.
“Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who has any information about the fire, or those responsible for starting it.
“They are also keen to speak to two women who raised the alarm and may be important witnesses.”
