Developer claims Newbury can cope with Sandleford traffic




Short filter lanes at roundabouts and junction upgrades will be sufficient mitigation, it is claimed

EXTRA filter lanes and widened approaches on some of Newbury’s busiest roads and roundabouts will be enough to cope with additional traffic created by the 2,000-home Sandleford Park development, developers of the site have claimed.

Bloor Homes Southern unveiled the proposed mitigation scheme as part of its full planning application for the site.

One of the improvements will see the double mini-roundabout by Budgens at Wash Common replaced with a ‘remodified’ single roundabout and additional filter lanes built on both Andover Road approaches, as well as a widened entry on Monks Lane.

Elsewhere, an extra approach lane will be built on the Newtown Road south side of the A343 Andover Road/Newtown Road roundabout (by St John’s post office).

Additional lanes will be built on all three of the main approaches to the Burger King roundabout – the A339 north, A339 south and St John’s Road.

The small link road between the Burger King roundabout and the adjacent Greenham Road roundabout would also be widened.

Big changes are also planned at the A339 Pinchington Lane roundabout near the Newbury Retail Park.

Extra approach lanes will be built on the A339 north and south sides of the roundabout and between the mini-roundabout on Pinchington Lane and the main roundabout on the A339.

The link road to the adjacent Newbury College roundabout would also be widened.

The college roundabout will be modified, with an extra approach lane from Monks Lane and widened entry on the Newtown Road approach.

As part of the programme of works, additional lanes will also be built on the A339 north and south approaches to the A339/Bear Lane roundabout by Sainsbury’s.

Bloor Homes has assured residents that owing to the small-scale improvements proposed, no third party land is required to complete the works and that whole roads are not proposed for widening.

A spokesman for Bloor Homes Southern, Daniel Hayman, said: “With regards to the proposed junction improvement schemes, these consist almost entirely of widened approaches and/or additional lanes on approaches to junctions

“The exact length over which widening or additional lanes are provided varies from arm to arm and from junction to junction, but whole roads are not proposed for widening.

“The improvements proposed to the junctions would not require third-party land and would be within highways land.

“We have undertaken an extensive modelling exercise of the local highway network looking at the amount of additional traffic expected to be generated by the new homes and its likely destination which have been agreed with West Berkshire Council.

“The results show that these highway improvement schemes release enough additional capacity to balance the additional journeys generated.”
