Developer named for Newbury town centre makeover
The 5.5 acre site in question lies between the railway station and Market Street, including the existing bus station and the council car park, and the council has said that the development will be 'residential led'.
West Berkshire Council confirmed the partnership between the council, Grainger and Network Rail was still going ahead, as originally reported by newburytoday.co.uk in 2006, but could not add any more information on the timing, scale or detail of the development.
A statement released by the council today (Mon) said that the redevelopment would improve pedestrian links between the station and Northbrook Street and Market Place and would also increasing parking for commuters.
It added that a new bus interchange at The Wharf will be created to replace the existing bus station.
West Berkshire's Executive Councillor for Town Centres, Pamela Bale, said: "The plan to improve this site will create a new gateway into Newbury and ultimately bring significant economic benefits for the whole town.
"It forms a key part of the Newbury Vision 2025 which has already delivered projects such as Parkway, the cinema, and the town centre pedestrian realm.
"The council look forward to seeing ideas from Grainger for this latest project, which will then be used to consult with the public later this year."
