Director honoured for work in health and care

MBE for head of institute covering vocational training, research and advice

A BORN-and-bred Newbury man has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours list.

Richard Griffin, aged 52, was appointed an MBE for his services to health and care.

Mr Griffin is director of the Institute of Vocational Learning and Workforce Research at Buckinghamshire New University.

The institute works with national bodies and covers all aspects of health and social care vocational training. It also carries out research, evaluation and policy advice and implementation.

Mr Griffin said: “I am delighted to have received an MBE. It is fantastic that the institute and Buckinghamshire New University’s work and commitment to addressing the training needs of health and social care support roles has been recognised in this way.

“The essential workforce of unregistered workers – including 1.3 million care assistants – provide the bulk of face-to-face support to parents. Too often these staff are under-valued and there is a lack of investment in their training.

“I’m proud to work with my colleagues on the development of high quality learning and development for support workers which is fundamental to the delivery of safe, compassionate and effective care.”

Mr Griffin was born in the family home in Denmark Road to Janet and Walter Griffin. He attended St Joseph’s Primary School before moving up to Park House School and St Bartholomew’s School sixth form.

He joked that the last time he appeared in the Newbury Weekly News was when he interviewed Lord Carnarvon for a schools project.

His proud mother Janet said she was absolutely delighted that her son has received the honour.

“We always knew he had a bit extra about him,” she said. “Even as a teenager he was very principled and he stands up for things he believes in.

“I’m absolutely delighted and so proud for him.”

Mr Griffin, who lives in London, will be presented with his MBE at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, on Wednesday, February 24.
