Disabled soldier thanks MP for helping find him a home

Lance-corporal Sheils thanked the Newbury Weekly News for highlighting how he had left the Irish Guards after an explosion damaged his hearing and how he’s been forced to live in his Volvo.
Mr. Sheils, 43, a local security officer, said: “I’m thrilled and grateful to so many people for giving me back my dignity.
“It’s a beautiful bungalow in Newbury and so cosy after sleeping in the car. I was able to invite my son for a Sunday lunch of beans and toast, as that’s all I could afford.
“But it meant we could sit and talk about his future, as he’s preparing to go into the regiment that I served with pride until my accident.
“I’d like to give a special ‘thank you’ to Mr. Benyon for speaking up for me, and to Sarah Martell and others at Sovereign Housing, who were brilliant, Discount Carpets for fitting the whole bungalow free, and Newbury News for printing my story.
“This is a fantastic new start for me. I shall now look for a cheap fridge and washing-machine, and a proper bed as my air-mattress keeps deflating, and I’m flat on the floor by five in the morning.”
Mr. Sheils stood guard outside Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, Windsor Castle and St. James’ Palace during his Army days, and left the Forces after gunfire damaged his hearing while training a squad for battle.
