New flats plan for London Road submitted to West Berkshire Council

Plans to turn a disused Newbury town centre office block into 15 flats have been submitted.

The application site just south of London Road has been empty since a previous application to develop it was turned down in 2014.

The latest application seeks to change the use of the building from commercial to residential.

Number 9 London Road is Grade II-listed and built in the early 18th century.

It was formerly part of the Phoenix Inn.

The contemporary rear office extensions were constructed in the 1980s.

Due to its vacancy much of the courtyard space has become overgrown and fallen into disrepair.

Access to the proposed plots is via an amended London Road entrance gate, and new rear access gate and the developers propose to plant trees to create a new courtyard space.
