Dog owner condemned for abandoning pet
Poppy was dumped outside the Dogs Trust’s re-homing centre at Plumb Farm, Hamstead Marshall, with a note taped to her collar explaining that her owner had moved away.
Unfortunately, the trust say this is not an isolated incident. The number of people convicted of cruelty and neglect to animals rose by nearly a quarter last year, according to figures announced by the RSPCA this week.
The RSPCA’s statistics show there was a 23.5 per cent rise in the number of people convicted for cruelty and neglect.
The Dogs Trust re-homing centre assistant manager, Jenny Hopkins described Poppy as a sweet natured and friendly dog which would make an ideal pet.
“It is always shocking that people would take such drastic actions when they can’t continue to care for their dog,” Ms Hopkins said. “We’re currently working with her to calm her down and try and reduce the tail chasing, which is an obvious sign of stress and rather understandable due to her change in circumstance.
“With her big brown eyes and bushy tail she is a gorgeous girl, who loves all the attention from all the staff and volunteers, just loves company.
“She needs an active family that will build up a bond with her and take the time to help her settle in to a new routine. She would like to be the only pet in the home, but once in and settled she will become a very loving and loyal addition to any lucky family.”
