Doing her shopping on the firm’s time

Julie Bassett, aged 55, of Hampstead Norreys, was given one minute to grab her weekly shop after purchasing a raffle ticket at the Hampstead Norreys Community Store, where she volunteers.
With seven children, 10 grandchildren and a great-grandson, feeding the family can be expensive, and Mrs Bassett managed to fill a basket with fresh meats, ready meals and a selection of cooking sauces.
She said: “It was brilliant. I had a lot of people cheering me on. It was a bit embarrassing but very good.”
The event was raising funds for new fittings for the store, with the total amount racking up to £130.
Store manager Jane Dipple said: “It’s not as easy as it sounds when you consider most shopping expeditions take the best part of an hour.
She added that she was thinking about running the prize draw every month.
The Hampstead Norreys Community Store, Church Street, has been supplying residents with
local produce for 18 months and has not only provided jobs for the area but drawn together a pool of 60 volunteers who donate their time to the helping in the shop.
