Blow to incinerator, question marks over future of Nature Discovery Centre and petrol giveaway

IN this week's Newbury Weekly News waste firm Grundon's hopes of building an incinerator in Chieveley have hit a large snag after the Transport Secretary recommended indefinite refusal of the plans.

With a special meeting of Chieveley Parish Council held to discuss the application this week and a large turnout of residents expected it has been a big week for campaigners as the fight against the energy from waste plant was kicked up a notch.

Waving placards and chanting West Berkshire Mencap representatives delivered a petition to West Berkshire Council over cuts to the charity's budget, and with the consultation process over the £2 million reduction in spending on vulnerable groups approaching pressure has mounted on the authority to come clean over its plans.

Berkshire health chiefs have come under fire after figures revealed West Berkshire had less spent on it than any other area of the county.
