Downs School gets green this weekend in Compton
The Downs School is hosting a community 'greening' initiative in Compton this Saturday.
The greening campaign, supported by the Parish Council and West Berkshire Council, aims to show people and organisations that taking small steps to reduce energy consumption and waste can have a big impact.
The event will start at 3pm.
The campaign started with a public meeting at the end of September, where local residents, community groups, societies, schools and businesses learned how they could get involved.
At the meeting, everyone chose eight greening actions for the whole village to take part in to reduce its carbon footprint and save money.
The eight actions will be introduced this weekend and include:
- Turning off all standbys when not using appliances.
- Line drying clothes in the summer.
- Turning the heating thermostat down by one degree.
- Installing a low flow showerhead.
- Reducing each normal shower time by one minute.
- Halving your food waste by making a meal plan and using leftovers.
- Going vegetarian an extra day a week.
- Walking or wheeling one mile to the shop and back once a week.
Every household will be given a Greening Compton poster and are asked to do at least five of the actions, tick them off and then put the poster up in their front window.
Organisers will then calculate the carbon saved – along with the total cost saving – from everyone's combined efforts.
