Drama as Bayer 10k runner collapses

The 45-year-old local man had no pulse and was not breathing when his friend and fellow runner - a Newbury police officer trained in advanced resuscitation - grabbed an automated external defibrillator (AED) device from nearby Red Cross officials and shocked the victim twice.
The officer said: “He was clinically dead. But we got him back - he was breathing by himself again.
"There should be one of these devices on every street corner. I've dealt with similar situations before...but never on someone I know."
The victim was flown to hospital by air ambulance, which landed in nearby fields after the Market Square proved too small an area in which to safely put down.

Despite the near tragedy, the run was a huge success. It was won - for the fifth, consecutive year - by 42-year-old Gareth Watkins, who completed the course in 33 minutes and 49 seconds.
