Driver arrested after crash demolishes Chieveley bus stop
Thames Valley Police spokesman, Craig Evry, said: “At about 4pm on Friday (6), a Thames Valley Police officer was driving along High Street in Chieveley and passed a car travelling in the opposite direction with no front index plate.
“The officer turned around to locate the vehicle, a white Subaru, and found it had been in a collision with a Vauxhall Corsa and then a bus shelter.
“Three men in the Subaru were uninjured.
“A man and a woman in the Corsa suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital.”
Mr Evry quashed village rumours that there had been a high speed pursuit involving the car and a police car.
Sam Roberts who sent in the photograph of the wreckage in to Newburytoday said that just 10 minutes earlier, two men had been sat in the shelter.
And Lance Wright, another bystander, added: “The bus stop was completely demolished.”
Chairman of Chieveley Parish Council, Rob Crispin, said that as the parish council, which owned the shelter, did not have mechanics to remove the debris, they had asked West Berkshire Council to deal with it.
The parish council would then pick up the bill.
He said: “With all these things, the main priority is to make the highway and the footway safe."
He added that the district council had already been around on Saturday to cordon off the area.
A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and possessing a blade/sharp pointed article in a public place.
He has been released on bail until October 4.
