Driver clocked near Chieveley sparks 75-mile 140mph police chase
A DRIVER spotted speeding near Chieveley was arrested after clocking breakneck speeds of 140mph during a 75-mile chase involving three police forces earlier today (Wednesday).The dramatic high-speed pursuit began when a Highways Agency officer alerted Thames Valley Police to a speeding motorist near the M4 Chieveley services heading towards London.
The suspect vehicle, a silver BMW Coupe, was chased by officers in both Thames Valley and the Metropolitan Police areas in connection with criminal offences when it entered Surrey on the M25 around 2:40am.
A spokesman for Thames Valley Police, Adam Fisher, said: “We pursued to Heathrow and then into Surrey where Surrey Police took over and our vehicle became the safety car."
Officers from the Surrey Roads Policing Unit, supported by the Surrey Police helicopter, pursued the car onto the M25 anti-clockwise carriageway, where it travelled at speeds believed to be around 140mph.
Two helicopters were scrambled to help track the vehicle and it motored along at such pace officers in cars eventually halted the chase due to the dangerous speeds involved.
Surrey police planted a stinger across the road near Junction 6 of the M25 to immobilise the vehicle before arresting the driver, from London, on suspicion of failing to stop for police and dangerous driving.
The M25 was closed for around ten minutes while the suspect vehicle was recovered and debris was cleared from the carriageway.
Officers are appealing for witnesses to the incident, and anyone with information is asked to contact Surrey Police on 101, quoting incident reference P12174801.
