Driver over the limit - but did not realise insurance was needed
Clare Barclay, prosecuting, said officers believed that 26-year-old Petre Macra, of Turnpike Road, was “trying to make off” after increasing his speed when he spotted them behind him.
She added that there were three other passengers in the Romanian-registered Ford Focus he was driving when it was pulled over.
Tests showed 61mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system. The legal limit is 35mcg.
Mr Macra admitted driving after drinking more than the legal limit, driving without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, all on September 6.
Defending, Paul Gil-Martin said Mr Macra, did not realise he was committing an offence in the UK by driving without insurance. Mr Gil-Martin added that the experience may have done Mr Macra “the world of good” in helping him understand the law in the UK.
Magistrates banned Mr Macra from driving for 16 months. He was fined £300 and ordered to pay costs of £50 and a statutory charge of £20.
