Driver will plead to keep his licence

On Thursday, June 12, 33-year-old Andrew Charles Batt, of Monks Lane, admitted taking a white Peugeot Index without the owner’s consent on May 10 this year.
He further admitted failing to provide a specimen for alcohol analysis and driving without insurance in Market Place, Newbury, on the same occasion.
Failing to provide such a specimen usually results in an automatic disqualification for a minimum of 12 months.
However, the court heard, unlike with a drink driving conviction, magistrates can exercise their discretion and Mr Batt will argue ‘special reasons’ - specifically, the short distance driven - in a bid to persuade them not to impose such a sentence.
The hearing was scheduled for September 4 and Mr Batt was bailed until then.
