Hundreds issued in fines for drivers breaching vehicle weight restrictions in Crookham Hill, Stockcross and Aldermaston




Five drivers have been dealt hundreds in fines for breaking vehicle weight restrictions.

It an offence under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to drive through an area where the vehicle exceeds the weight limit imposed – unless it is delivering or collecting items within the restriction area.

On April 3, a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) was observed travelling through Crookham Hill, which is subject to a 7.5 tonne weight restriction.

But the HGV’s maximum revenue/gross weight was 18 tonnes.

The driver pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates’ Court January 17 and was fined £123 and ordered to pay a £180 contribution towards the prosecution costs and a Victim’s Surcharge of £39.

Another HGV with a maximum gross weight of 32 tonnes was seen breaking the weight restriction on the same road on April 16.

On June 6, a HGV with a maximum gross weight of 26 tonnes was seen breaking the weight restriction along Ermin Street in Stockcross, which is subject to a 7.5 tonne weight restriction.

The driver was found guilty at Reading Magistrates’ Court on January 17 and fined £146, ordered to pay £180 contribution towards the prosecution costs and a Victim’s Surcharge of £88.

The same day, another HGV with a maximum gross weight of 32 tonnes was seen driving through the same road.

The driver pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates’ Court on January 17 and was fined £192, ordered to pay £180 contribution towards the prosecution costs and a Victim’s Surcharge of £77.

On June 6, another HGV driver with a maximum gross weight of 13.5 tonnes was seen driving through Church Road in Aldermaston, which is subject to a 7.5 tonne weight restriction.

The driver pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates’ Court on January 17 and was fined £252, ordered to pay £180 contribution towards the prosecution costs and a Victim’s Surcharge of £101.

Routine inspections are undertaken on weight restrictions across West Berkshire to ensure vehicles are not breaking the law.

PPP officers also undertake routine patrols with Thames Valley Police to check for overweight vehicles on the roads.
