Drumming workshop and concert success at Ashford Hill church
London-based company hosts half-term fun
A DRUMMING workshop and fundraising concert held at an Ashford Hill church proved big successes.
Providing fun-packed entertainment for youngsters over half-term, the drumming workshop, at St Paul’s Church, in Ashford Hill Road, was hosted by Adrian Wiggins, of London-based Big Beats, with separate workshops for different age ranges and parents joining in.
Vanessa Martin, a spokeswoman for the organisers, said: “Adrian Wiggins was brilliant and got everyone listening hard for the pulse as the samba rhythms played on the off beats.
“We were on groups of instruments together and more people turned up to join in too which was great.
“We are going to be arranging musical enrichments each term at St Paul’s Church and this term it is rhythm.”
The workshops came hot on the heels of another recent musical success at the church – a concert, including music and poetry, entitled The Church at Ashford Hill.
It was named after an organ piece, the score written by the late Ron Goodwin, who dedicated it to the church.
Mrs Martin said: “It was a lovely evening where the many aspects of music from classical to folk came together making the first Tribute to Ron Goodwin concert a great success.
“The evening also raised hundreds of pounds for the repairs for the church.”
Villagers are fundraising to meet a £200,000 target for repairs to the church roof and spire of the historic church, and their efforts have raised £100,000 in 12 months.
