Eastbury to launch long-awaited flood alleviation scheme this week

Newbury MP Richard Benyon will attend a turf-cutting ceremony to launch the construction of the village’s long-awaited Flood Alleviation Scheme.
Honorary chairwoman of the Eastbury Village Flood Alleviation Scheme (EVFPA), Liz Goodman, said: “After nearly three long years and the disastrous floods of the last winter in Eastbury, we are now at one of the last milestones in delivering this vital project.
“While it is recognised that there is never going to be a silver bullet to all flooding issues in Eastbury or the Lambourn Valley, we very much hope that this scheme will go a long way to help protect the village from certain types of flooding for generations to come.
“We are just overjoyed that our partnership with the Environment Agency (EA) and collaboration with West Berkshire Council is finally delivering this project, particulars before the onset of this winter’s potential flooding.”
She added: “We’re tremendously excited about the delivery of this project, which would not have been possible without support over the years from all stakeholders, particularly the EA but also West Berkshire Council to the landowner, and notably the support of Richard Benyon, which has been invaluable.
“The Government’s Partnership Scheme is remarkable in that it gives all communities whether rural or urban, the chance to protect themselves from the destruction of flooding which has both immediate and long term impacts.”
The scheme will consist of a throttle and a bund, and will cost £400,000, of which the community has raised £60,000 through donations, fund raising and grants.
The turf cutting ceremony will take place at mid day near the village exit for Lambourn.
