Elderly Newbury woman burgled in 'cowardly crime'
The lady answered the door at her Wendan Road property at around 9.30pm on Saturday, June 7.
The man told her that he was a policeman and that two people had been caught coming out of her house.
He added that he wanted to check if any jewellery or money had been stolen.
The victim showed the man where she kept her treasured items; who then stole items of great sentimental value.
These were a fine gold chain with a one inch gold cross pendant; a 1/2 Sovereign coin on a fine gold chain; a plain gold signet ring with no engravings or stones; and a gold engagement ring with three small diamonds set in a line.
The offender is described as white, in his mid forties, 5ft 6ins, slim, with short black hair. He was wearing a dark jacket and trousers.
Det Con Pam Finch said: “This was a cowardly crime in which a vulnerable, elderly woman was deliberately targeted and items of great sentimental value were stolen.
“If someone calls at your door and you are not expecting them, always keep your chain or bar on when speaking to them. Ask to see their warrant card and make a note of their name and shoulder number. If you do not think they are genuine, call the police via 101 to check if that officer should be at your door and why.”
