Elderly residents led to safety in Newbury flat fire





Watch manager of White Watch at Newbury Fire Station, Phil Knight, said four pumps, including two from Newbury, one from Hungerford and one from Whitley Wood, along with a support vehicle from Tilehurst, were called at 11pm to Speenhamland Court, Pelican Lane, to a first floor kitchen fire in a block of flats.
Three people were led to safety by firefighters and the building was evacuated.
No-one was hurt. Ambulance services carried out checks at the scene.
Firefighters weating four sets of breathing apparatus used two hosereels to extinguish the blaze.
The cause was put down to accidental.
The kitchen was ten per cent damaged in the blaze, with smoke damage to parts of the building.
Firefighters left the scene at 12.30am.
Mr Knight also issued a fire safety message on the dangers of leaving items on hobs:
"We have attended quite a few incidents where people have left items on hobs and safety advice is to isolate the oven and use a work surface, as there have been incidents where items have caught alight," said Mr Knight.
