Engineers still on site at Calcot gas leak following storm
Southern Gas Networks (SGN) were alerted to the leak on the A4 Bath Road at 8.30am after damage was caused to a gas governer, an above-ground installation that regulates gas pressure in the network.
A 560m cordon was put in place by Thames Valley Police and the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS), however this was lifted at around 11am.
Forty homes in the nearby area were also evacuated.
A spokeswoman for SGN, Hannah Brett, said to newburytoday.co.uk this afternoon: "The damage from the tree caused gas to leak from the governor and gas supplies were lost to 16 properties in Calcot Court.
"We have now secured the leak and our engineers are currently completing our repair.
"We hope to restore supply to all affected properties later today."
