English country garden book sparks interest in America

Anne Webster’s self-published book, An Incompetent Gardener’s Tale, chronicles the creation of her two-acre garden, which she started in the 1970s. Retired teacher and JP, Mrs Webster, now in her 70s, said: “I started it from scratch; there was just a patch of grass on the corner of Byres Lane and Bramley Road. It certainly helps to keep me fit – I feel vigorous.”
The garden, with English native trees and a varied range of vegetables and flowers, borders Mrs Webster’s home, a grade 11-listed, thatched Elizabethan house (circa 1600), made out of two cottages that once housed Wellington estate workers.
“We are pretty self-sufficient when it’s the vegetable season,” said Mrs Webster, who lives there with her husband.
Neighbouring Pamber Forest, the garden has not only attracted considerable interest from the local wildlife, such as ducks and hares, which have camped out under Mrs Webster’s window, but also from the US.
After visiting a branch of bookshop chain Barnes & Noble in Florida, during a trip to see family there, the buyer purchased a pile of the books, which Mrs Webster will be signing when she returns in November.
