Entries open for Newbury's Race for Life 2014

Event organisers for the charity have adopted the rallying cry: ‘Cancer, we’re coming to get you,” urging women to sign up as soon as possible for this year’s race, at Newbury showground, on Sunday July 6.
Cara Waller, Cancer Research UK’s South East Events Manager, said: “We’re calling on Newbury’s mighty-mums, gutsy-grans, feisty friends and go-getting girls to join our formidable army and take on cancer at this year’s Race for Life.
“We know how committed Newbury women can be when they really make up their minds to do something. We want to harness that power to stop cancer in its tracks, by raising money for life-saving research.”
Race for Life, she continued, was non-competitive: “It’s not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer.”
Last year, 1,929 women took part in Race for Life in Newbury and raised £110,300. This year, organisers need 2,200 women and girls to stride out. to help raise £129,723.
According to the charity, every hour, around five people are diagnosed with cancer in the South East* - all somebody’s mum, dad, brother, sister, friend or colleague.
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is a women-only series of 5k and 10k events, which raise millions of pounds every year to funding life-saving research.

*Approximation based on annual average figure of around 43,100 cases of all cancers (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) diagnosed between 2008 to 2010, in the South East Government Office Region
