Newbury Business Improvement District (BID) - an organisation dedicated to the promotion of local trading - has been awarded up to £100,000 from the European Regional Development Fund, to help attract visitors back to the town centre.

The money is being made available via West Berkshire Council, and four projects deploying the funds have been outlined by the BID.

Among these are plans to beautify Newbury, to purchase gazebos for use by local businesses along Northbrook Street, and to create a digital platform for interactive visitor experiences along the high street.

A Christmas brand is among the projects being formulated.

In addition, a Christmas brand is being designed for Newbury, to be unveiled as part of the town's first ever Victorian Christmas Fayre.

The Fayre will run between December 3 and December 5, and more information on it and other festive events can be found at bit.ly/3lU10a7

The BID's CEO, Melissa Hughes, said: "Receiving up to £100,000 as part of the Welcome Back Fund via the EDRF is fantastic.

"Throughout the pandemic, we have been working in partnership with other local stakeholders to support local businesses and the safe re-opening of Newbury town centre, whilst doing our bit to make Newbury a desirable place to visit through our regular markets, summer events, and widespread marketing activity.

"This money will be used to build on that work, to future proof Newbury’s high street whilst delivering initiatives and activities that help to shape the town's sense of place and provide new, engaging, and immersive experiences for local residents and visitors to the town."

West Berkshire Council's economy manager, Katharine Makant, said: "We’re delighted to grant this funding to Newbury BID via the Welcome Back Fund and EDRF.

"We’re confident that the BID’s proposed activity will have a significant and positive impact on supporting town centre recovery here in Newbury, whilst aligning with some of our wider schemes across the district.

"In particular, this Christmas we’re showcasing independent local businesses with green initiatives by creating a new online magazine. This will not only help to support the local businesses, but will also help residents to be eco-conscious and shop green this festive season."
