Everything's coming up roses in Cold Ash

Village horticultural society holds its annual rose show

GARDENERS in Cold Ash rose to the challenge in an attempt to be named winner of the Cold Ash Horticultural Society’s Rose Show.

Roses, sweet peas, clematis and other shrubs were on display at the annual show held in the Acland Hall on Friday, June 19.

Organisers said that the year had been an excellent one for roses, with the recent dry weather meaning that the blooms were unmarked and therefore looked wonderful.

They also said that people had entered fabulous sweet peas with a gorgeous scent.

John Eckton judged the flowers and explained to the audience what he was looking for in each class.

Mr Eckton, who grows sweet peas himself, said that if he could have awarded a prize for the best exhibit in the show it would
have been for Mark Elms’ sweet peas.

New member Rosemary Mason won the Sinclair Bowl for the best rose exhibit with her multi-flowered roses.

Ray Bailey won the Lawrence Date Cup for the most points in the show, having won points in six classes.

Organisers thanked Mr Eckton, the exhibitors and the committee (and their helpers) for their hard work on the evening.
