Debut single for Future Icon winners and Newbury brothers Lilypads

Former Falkland and St Bart’s students Thomas and Oliver Norman, winners of the Future Icon Competition, have released their first single Ode To You.

Having formed Lilypads in September 2022 the duo quickly established themselves on the London music scene with their distinctive sound of affable harmonies and unique songwriting charm.

The brothers decided to come together after Thomas came back to the UK having lived for six years in Barcelona. They were encouraged to form Lilypads, having both performed and been well received at an Open Mic night at Ace Space, Newbury.

Oliver explains the band’s name: “We grew up in Wash Common and our house number was on a plate with a frog on it. None of us knew why, but the image stuck so when it came to band names it seemed a natural homage to the place that gave us so much.”

And their love of the area doesn’t stop there. The music video accompanying ‘Ode to You’ was filmed in the fields around south Newbury, using old school friends to help them get the message out.

Thomas, a videographer in his own right, said: “It was a natural location for us, having made hundreds of videos growing up with my best mates, and so we brought the crew back together for our first music video.”

Their debut single Ode to you is a song of gratitude to the people who have helped them out and lifted them up when they were down. The track has been described as “full of the personality and allure that the Future Icon Competition winners are growing known for, boasting laid-back, intricately crafted melodies that wrap around you like a warm comfort blanket”.

Lilypads showcased their talents at the City Sounds Festival in Chichester on November 25, and then headline at the O2 Academy in Islington on December 16.

Asked about coming to Newbury the brothers said “we very much hope to be coming back to perform in our home town in 2024.”
