Atomic Weapons Establishment evacuates buildings on the site while suspect package is investigated
TWO buildings at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in Aldermaston have been evacuated this afternoon.
The buildings close to the main gate (Tues) have been cleared due to a suspect package.
AWE spokesman, Alan Price, confirmed a suspect package found at AWE's fire station was under investigation.
Employees, he also confirmed, had been evacuated from buildings within the site, while the investigation was carried out.
A further statement is awaited from AWE as to whether the all clear has been given.
AWE manufactures and provides the warheads for the UK's nuclear deterrant, Trident and is one of the area's largest employers.
Update to follow.
