Exclusive: UK Uncut planning protest in Newbury

Newbury-based Vodafone the suspected target for tax-avoidance protest

PROTEST group UK Uncut are planning to hold a tax-avoidance demonstration in Newbury on Saturday, with the Vodafone store in Northbrook Street a likely target.

The group has posted a message on its website calling for protesters to head to the town hall in Newbury at 10.30am for a day of action.

A message sent out to members claimed: "Vodafone owe £6 billion in tax. It's scandalous that the Government should let them get away with this, while cutting services to help pensioners on fixed incomes below the breadline. That sum would pay for all of West Berkshire's home help, meals on wheels service, and could re-open the three local day centres where elderly people used to enjoy meeting friends.

"It makes you wonder what the Government priorities are."

The group have targeted the Newbury-based telecommunications giant for several months over the issue of the tax bill, which UK Uncut has accused the firm of dodging.

Vodafone has repeatedly maintained its stance that it has complied with UK tax regulations and does not owe anything, in the face of repeated protests held inside its high street stores across the country.

Thames Valley Police and Vodafone have as yet not given a comment.
