Extension to suspended sentence for father who used home as brothel

Gerald Gillett’s latest offence involving prostitution was committed just weeks after a court took pity on him because of his young son.
In March, magistrates decided their powers to punish the 48-year-old were insufficient. They told Gillett, of Oddfellows Road, Newbury, that they were sending him to the judge for sentencing.
Last August, at Reading Crown Court Gillett admitted controlling prostitution for gain between December 2011 and November 2012.
Trudi Yeatman, defending, said her client did it for the money, having fallen on hard times.
Judge Nicholas Wood told Gillett at the time: “You have made a substantial amount of money out of this” and sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment.
Suspending the sentence for 18 months, Judge Wood explained: “I will (do so) simply in the interests of your son.”
Gillett was also ordered to undertake 100 hours’ unpaid community work.
At the hearing at Reading on Tuesday, Gillett admitted the new offence of allowing his premises to be used for prostitution last October. Instead of activating the sentence, the court decided to lengthen the suspension period.
As a result, Gillett is sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.
In addition he was required to carry out 50 hours unpaid community work and ordered to pay £500 costs.
