Facebook page to update on Victoria Park cafe progress
It follows the recent submission of a formal planning application for the scheme.
Newbury Town Council is seeking permission to demolish the existing cafe building which houses a kiosk and a storeroom for park and boating equipment and replace it with a centre to offer indoor and outdoor seating areas, catering facilities, public toilets, changing room facilities and office and storage space.
The page is available to view at www.facebook.com/victoriaparknewbury and will include updates on construction of the scheme from all parties involved, including Newbury Town Council, architects and project managers.
The plans are due to go before West Berkshire Council’s western area planning committee in either September or October and the chairman of the town council’s Victoria Park working group David Allen (Lib Dem, Victoria) said if permission was granted construction would begin almost immediately.
“We are all very excited about this new project,” he said. “It’s going to be good for the town and for the park.”
Building students at Newbury College have been invited to visit the site during construction to witness the process, while children at Victoria Park Nursery School will also have the chance to learn of the process.
Mr Allen added that a decision on who will operate the centre and how had not yet been made, but that there had been a number of interested parties coming forward.
The project is expected to cost in the region of £500,000. Of this, £250,000 will be provided by the Greenham Common Trust and the remainder through a public works loan.
