Dispersal order put into place at Newbury’s Michaelmas Fair after fight last night

Police will be stepping up patrols around Newbury's annual Michaelmas Fair.

A section 34 dispersal order has been put in place around the fair until Sunday, following an incident last night.

The order is in place round this area.

Officers were called to reports of a fight by Northcroft Leisure Centre yesterday (Wednesday).

"A dispersal authority has been authorised for this location and will remain in place until the 19th October," the force confirmed today (Thursday).

Thames Valley Police said additional officers will now be deployed to the area "to maintain public safety" and to enforce the dispersal order.

A section 34 aims to "stop antisocial behaviour and crime such as harassment, intimidation or disorder".

It gives police, including PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers) powers to tell people to leave an area.

If they refuse it can lead to arrest, fines, or even a prison sentence.

The power is granted under the Anti Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.
