Thatcham family hits bullseye with 12-hour darts fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support
A Thatcham family have smashed their fundraising target after a 12-hour dart marathon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
Thatcham man Clive Bailey played darts at The White Hart pub in Thatcham from 10am till 10pm on Saturday.
And he invited members of the public to challenge him in 15-minute slots for a donation to the charity.
He and his family expected to raise £2,000 but ended up with double that thanks to some generous donations.
The charity auction alone raised £1,800.
And new Newbury MP Lee Dillon even paid them a visit.
Mr Bailey has played darts around Thatcham for years, explained his daughter Kerry Bailey, also from Thatcham.
“He plays darts four nights a week in all the local leagues,” she said.
“Everyone has been affected by cancer, our family in particular.”
And speaking about the fundraiser, she added: “During the football match [UEFA Euro quarter finals] it was quite tense for him, because he couldn’t see the TV.”
Kerry and her son also join him for games on weekdays.
A children’s tournament was also held for seven to 16-year-olds, along with a BBQ, raffle and tombola.
In particular, the family wish to thank the following businesses for their support: Secure Systems, for providing a TV for the auction; Paula Elvey Semi-Permanent MakeUp Technician; Newbury Racecourse; Newbury & Crookham Golf Club; Unknown Hair Space; Eden Vauxhall Newbury; Northcroft Leisure Centre; Bella Luna; Weavers Walk Cafe; Reading Football Club; Donnington Valley Hotel; Paul Walden Decorating; Dazzling Window Cleaner; Best Buds Florist; Lush Hair; Guru Salon; and everyone who donated prizes to the raffle, tombola and cake sale.
